President's Report

Hello readers, it’s nice to see that Beecroft Rotary has reopened their second-hand bookshop in Hannah Street. To me, the bookshop reflects the vibrancy of our local community including the willingness of residents to volunteer and become involved. Beecroft is fortunate to have such an active Rotary club.

The Wongala Crescent unit complex with its retail space is nearing completion. The removal of the final barricades and construction material will be welcome. The new complex is likely to have an influence on our existing local shops. The retailing environment will change to reflect shoppers’ needs so I am expecting further changes to the mixture of shops in the shopping centre.

Like other community organisations, the Trust is regularly invited to apply for state and federal grants. Last week I applied for another grant, with Hornsby Council’s support, to install a second picnic table at the Beecroft Village Green. The new play equipment has proved to be very popular and a second picnic table is now needed. If the Trust is not successful in procuring the grant this year, we will try again next year.

What the Civic Trust did in August / September 2026
Successful Grant Application
The Trust received a grant of $1,200 under the Federal Government Volunteers Grants Activity Scheme for 2026/2027.   Successful applications for grants such as these assist the Trust in keeping its membership dues as low as possible.  Whereas many community organisations have increased their annual fees in recent times, the current membership fee for the Trust remains $20 per calendar year.  In recognition of the grant, the Trust will meet with Julian Leeser MP to update him on the activities and current priorities for the Trust.

Pedestrian Safety in Hannah St
After a resident was observed to trip on a loose paver outside Beecroft Place recently, the Trust wrote to Hornsby Council on 19 September 2026.  The Trust asked that loose and projecting pavers be rectified as a matter of urgency as they pose a real danger for pedestrians.  The issue has been logged by the Council maintenance section and Cr Verity Greenwood has offered to follow up on the issue.

The President also wrote to the General Manager, Hornsby Council on 24 September 2026 to request that the Hannah St precinct be included in the regular weed spraying maintenance program.  Attention was drawn to the increased weed growth between the footpath pavers and on the roadside ‘blisters ‘between parking areas. While volunteers water the planter boxes regularly, the weed growth contributes to the loosening of the pavers and is also unsightly.

Proposal for a Spring Flower Festival for Hornsby Shire
Hornsby Council has funded a proposal from Dr Verity Greenwood, C Ward Councillor, to hold a spring festival in September 2027 to connect communities across the shire and to celebrate flowers, gardens, walking trails, reserves, and the bounty of nature, and associated arts, and creative enterprises.  Beecroft in Bloom and the Beecroft railway gardens will be part of the festival.  The Trust will offer its support.

Timeline for Traffic Lights at Kirkham St and Beecroft Rd Intersection
Following another recent bad car crash at the intersection of Beecroft Rd and Kirkham St some residents have been asking when the long-sought traffic lights will be installed.  As reported previously, funding of $3.1M for the upgrade of the intersection with provision of traffic lights work has been approved under the Towards Zero Safer Roads Program.  Transport for NSW is currently finalising the detailed community consultation, design phase and utility planning required before construction work commences.  All works funded under this program should be completed within three years.

110 Chapman Ave.
Two years ago, the pavement on the corner on Chapman and Cardinal Avenues was removed and replaced with hoardings.  With gradual deterioration over time, the corner became even more hazardous.  After much lobbying to Council over that time, the dangerous corner has finally been transformed into a safer intersection.

Home Fire Safety Checks
The Trust wishes to draw readers' attention to the home fire safety check service provided by Fire and Rescue NSW.  During a safety check, Fire and Rescue NSW will attend your home and check that you have working smoke alarms, that they are in good working condition, and are installed in suitable areas. If you do not have one, firefighters will install a long-life battery-powered smoke alarm as well as replace existing smoke alarm batteries all at no cost. With your permission, firefighters will also ask you to show them around your home and property to enable personalised fire safety advice.
Everyone can benefit from a Safety Visit, however there are people within our community who are statistically at higher risk of incidents occurring, including:
  • Over 65’s.
  • Those who live alone.
  • People with limited mobility, hearing or vision impairment.
  • Residents who are supported by carers, family and friends.
  • And anyone with English as a second language.

Hi All,
I have received the following information from Transurban on the status of the night-works on the M2.  The noise has been loud and disturbing of a night but hopefully it is worth it.

The pavement resurfacing works in the westbound section of the M2 between Beecroft Road and Pennant Hills Road are currently expected to be completed this week, subject to the weather and operational requirements.

Following this, works are expected to continue west of Pennant Hills Road over the coming weeks as the project progresses along the motorway. There will also be some finishing works (such as line marking etc) undertaken in the area sporadically as required.

Please note that work schedules can change due to factors such as weather or operational requirements.

The  Bush Music  Club (BMC) Beecroft Bush Dance
The Bush Music Club (BMC) was formed in 1954 to collect and promote Australian folk music, songs, and dance.  We are Australia’s oldest continuously operating folk club. The musicians are all members of the BMC and take pleasure in playing for an audience and in providing enjoyment for the dancers.  It is all voluntary and the musicians are not paid.
We welcome everyone, young and old, to come along to this dance.  It is not required that you know these dances.  All dances are taught on the day,  and then called during the actual dance so beginners can quickly become involved.
It is all about having a fun time and doing something different.  Even if you don’t wish to dance why not come along anyway to watch and listen to live Australian folk music being played.

Beecroft Orchestra

Beecroft orchestra and Gente, gente! team up this December 6th to present a People's Messiah lead by Dr Joanna Drimatis. Soloists and chorus from Gente, gente! will lead the public in a 70 minute selection of pieces from Handel's iconic Messiah.

We are currently looking for choristers who might be interested in being part of the stage choir.  This is an open call, non audition, voluntary opportunity.

Rehearsals are reasonably flexible and can accommodate varied availability from those interested.

Rehearsals are on Monday nights in Carlingford with the orchestra performance at Cheltenham Girls High on the 6th December.

If you’re interested please get in touch at gentegenteproductions@gmail.com to see schedule, repertoire list and ask any questions you may have!
